The Right Order to Apply Your Skincare (Most People Get This Backwards)
Share
You can own the right products and still get worse results β because the order you apply them in matters almost as much as what's in the bottle.
Skin absorbs products in layers. Apply them in the wrong sequence and you're not layering, you're blocking. A heavier product applied too early creates a barrier that stops everything after it from actually reaching your skin.
The rule: thinnest to thickest
The general principle is simple β water-based and lightweight formulas go first, oils and heavier creams go last. Your skin absorbs thin, water-based products quickly. If you apply a thick balm or oil first, it sits on top and nothing applied after it can get through.
The actual order
1. Cleanse. Start with a gentle, non-stripping cleanser. Our Activated Charcoal Soap removes impurities without disrupting your skin barrier β the foundation everything else depends on.
2. Tone. A toner preps your skin to properly absorb what comes next, and calms any reactivity left over from cleansing. Our Natural Rosa Purifying Toner does this without the sting of alcohol-based formulas.
3. Treat. This is where targeted, lightweight treatments go β serums, balms addressing a specific concern. Apply Rose Elixir to dry patches, cuticles, or under-eyes at this stage, while skin is still slightly damp from toning.
4. Oil. Face oils go after treatments but before heavy creams β lighter than a butter, heavier than a serum. Blooming Bliss absorbs fully at this stage without blocking what comes after.
5. Moisturize. The heaviest, most occlusive product goes last β its job is to seal everything in underneath it. Lemongrass Shea Butter locks in every layer applied before it.
The mistake almost everyone makes
Applying a heavy moisturizer or oil first, then wondering why a serum or toner "doesn't do anything." It's not the product failing β it's sitting on top of a barrier it can no longer get through.
Morning vs. night
This order holds for both routines. In the morning, keep it lighter β cleanse, tone, a lightweight layer of oil or treatment, then moisturize. At night, when your skin does most of its repair work, this is when the fuller sequence β all five steps β matters most.
The takeaway
You don't need more products. You need the right order. Five simple steps, applied correctly, do more than ten products layered randomly.
